How to Oof
aka Oops all warnings
You can easily write oofs just by editing the file at _data/oofs.yml
. If you're not familiar with YAML files, here's a guide. Here's what a new oof would look like:
- title: New Oof Comin In Hot
oof: This is the content of the oof!
octothorpes: ["thorpe", "to", "your", "heart's", "content"]
Caution - Because of how Glitch works, if you mess that file up by accident (I did it a lot), the site might stop updating, even if you fix the file. You'll have to hard refresh the site after fixing it.
Limitations: Oofs are just the title and meta description from the page they're linked to. So no html, no images, who knows what else you can't do with them. This is a weird new thing. But the fun part is that each oof is just a regular web page, so you can put anything you want there. And we hope you do!
Etiquette: Before you start oofing, delete the existing oofs! Puhleeeze It'll get real confusing otherwise. Also, be nice. Don't post wack stuff. Remember you're on Glitch, so their terms apply. Our Terms apply too!
Claim a handle
By default, your site name will show up in the feed of things you Octothorpe. But you can change it in _data/site.js
.
Here's the wild thing: There are zero controls about identity here. These aren't really "handles." So, uhh, aim for something unique. This is a weird new thing!
Bonus: Every oof will already be tagged xoxofest so there's a shared feed for everyone using them. That's what you'll see when you first hit the Oofs page.
Oof a regular post
If you're making regular posts, you can easily join that feed by adding oof: yes
to your front matter. Like this:
---
layout: layouts/post
title: My cool post
oof: yes
---
That way you don't need to remember the shared octothorpe to get in on the group feed. Psst: it's xoxofest
